The Milwaukee Fire Department, also known as MFD, is the primary fire suppression, prevention, rescue and emergency medical service for the City of Milwaukee. The department's motto is "Courage, Integrity and Honor."

The Milwaukee Fire Department consists of approximately 1000 firefighters, which many serve simultaneously as paramedics providing BLS (basic life support) and ALS (advance life support) EMS services. MFD was ranked 3rd in the country for best medical emergency service by a USA Today study in 2003.

The Milwaukee Fire Department is currently under the leadership of Fire Chief Douglas A. Holton. Holton is the first African-American fire chief in the city's history. The assistant fire chief assists Fire Chief Holton and assumes full command of the Fire Fighting Division in his absence.

Organizational structure

The Milwaukee Fire Department has six support divisions: Fire Fighting Division, Bureau of Administration, Bureau of Instruction and Training, Bureau of Construction and Maintenance, Bureau of Special Operations, and Bureau of Technical Services.

Bureaus

The Milwaukee Fire Department Bureau of Administration is responsible for maintaining records of alarms, fire losses, personnel and costs. This bureau is also accountable for payroll, budget requests, expenditures, and any other reports and records necessary for the efficient operation of the department.

The MFD Bureau of Instruction and Training is responsible for the proper instruction and training of all members of the Fire Fighting Division, as well as the research and development in the science of fire-fighting techniques and audiovisual support.

The MFD Bureau of Construction and Maintenance is responsible for repairing, maintaining, inspecting and accepting all Milwaukee Fire Department equipment, fire-fighting apparatus, buildings, and furnishing fire-fighting supplies.

The MFD Bureau of Special Operations has four special teams within the Milwaukee Fire Department: Dive Rescue Team, Hazardous Materials Team, H.U.R.T (Heavy Urban Rescue Team), and the Emergency Medical Service Team.

The MFD Bureau of Technical Services is responsible for the automation and data processing of technical services used within the department such as Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), Record Management System (RMS), Local Area Network (LAN), stand-alone workstations, custom programming, and any other computerization requirements for all agencies in MFD.
